How can I motivate myself to study for the USMLE Step 1? by William Boyce
Answer by William Boyce:
When i was studying for Step 1 i fell into a deep depression for 2 weeks. I could barely move. It was a very dark period. The most dark period of my life. I realized that i did not want to be a physician. I had to do some volunteering and be around some patients in order to get my inspiration back. I also had a personal medical tragedy that reinvigorated my zeal. My best friend had died from an illness.
When you don't see the patients in front of you it is very difficult to study. You don't see the point. The cases you are studying on the computer seem abstract, distant and fake until you see actual patients. If you need motivation then go do some more clinical shadowing ( the Emergency department is the best place) . The real life stuff will give you inspiration to study all that dry ridiculous book stuff.
If that doesn't reinvigorate you then maybe medicine is not your true passion and that is ok. It wasn't mine. You may have talents that could make you wildly successful in another field. Good luck!
