I Want To Help People

I want to be a doctor to help people. Because high school teachers that influence the lives of kids don’t help people. The firefighter who runs into a burning building looking for survivors doesn’t help people. The parole officer who actually gives a damn about his client doesn’t help people. The Coast Guard rescue swimmer who saves you from drowning in the ocean doesn’t help people. The social worker that finds a loving foster family for a child doesn’t help people. The property lawyer that helps your grandmother keep her house doesn’t help people. The scientists who develop cutting edge prosthesis don’t help people. The scientist who develop the drugs that doctors prescribe doesn’t help people. The author who writes the next great American novel does not help people. The software designer that allows you to use a computer does not help  people. The farmer who produces food for the nation doesn’t help people. Nope, no one really helps people besides a doctor.

  1. I’m currently in the position you were in maybe a few years ago. (I hope you’re doing well). And I cannot tell you how much this statement has plagued me for the past 4 years, and I have 2 more years to go. Everyone who enjoys medicine and wants to be a doctor pretend like the reason they chose medicine is because they’re the most altruistic people who want to help people. And so for years I’ve felt guilty, asking myself why I hate medicine, that does it mean I don’t want to help people? Because apparently only doctors help people. Thank you for writing this. I’ve been clinically depressed for as long as I’ve been in medical school, but it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who’s had to go through this mental torture. And that it’s possible to get through it.
